Boo!

I know this one is way too dark, but it was just such a good expression. I lightened it up a bit and even though the colour got all messed up, Milo still looks great.

Happy Halloween! And BOO!

Halloween for Milo

Like I said, he's been in his costume for days. Many many thanks to his Gramma, who made the thing herself. We've had so many people take pictures of him and tell us how cute he looks in it, as if we don't know that already.

And the old school Vans really make the outfit pop.

As we were walking to the Britannia Halloween party, there were three balloons tied to a post. This delayed us for about ten minutes while Milo batted them, hugged them, and tried to eat them.

Ooh, I can hardly wait. I'm going to feed Milo a chocolate bar tonight when Mommy's not looking. Now THAT'S scary!

Halloween Funny

Yup, cut out from the newspaper and scanned. Now THAT'S Web 2.0 in action!

Milo in his costume

So Milo's basically been in his Halloween costume for four days straight. At the grocery store, clothes shopping with Mom, visiting his Nana, out at the Parade of Lost Souls, and at the playground.

And he's off!

Costume or no costume, and no matter if it's getting dark outside, I'm going down the slide!

One, big, happy, somewhat spooky family. Happy Halloween everybody!

A Chill in the Air

...means that it's time for a warmer hat. I hope three cute, warm hats will do us for the winter.

On our way from the KinderGym to the park, Milo stopped at the big rock.

Seriously, he likes that rock.

Mom, you tell that boy he's a tree-hugger, dammit. The rocks of this planet aren't in any danger and they don't produce oxygen. As far as I know, at least.

Monkey hat at Garden Park

His clothes are getting small on him, so photo ops must come when they can.

This green hat/jean jacket combo is one of my all-time favourites and I weep at the realization that the jacket is almost too small for him. Quick! Act cute!

Milo! Make your car noise! Bbbrrrrrrummmmmm!

Crawling through that tunnel is still pretty fun...

Milo looks like he should be in a Sears catalogue.

Now run! Run like the wind! I'm a fast dog!

Milo is getting more teeth

So the word on the street (from a mom I know) is that the diaper rash is caused by excess acidity in his urine, which is a by-product of the whole teething thing.

When the new teeth come in, the baby drools more and swallows it, which leads to more diarrhea, which makes his bum sore. Either than, or the acid comes from the newly formed tooth.

I can vouch for the acidity thing -- I've certainly noticed a stronger smell coming from his wet diaper in the morning.

So, before he's gone forever, here are a few more pics of still mostly toothless Milo. Seven teeth and counting. Actually, I haven't been counting. I'll count tonight when he's in the bathtub.

Teething times have come again

Oh, poor Milo. Another molar is coming through.

Our boy is a trooper, though, he doesn't really have a problem with his mouth, it's more about his butt.

So why does teething give him a diaper rash? I'll google that one and find out later.

Right now, I just want to show off a couple of photos from the past couple of weeks, before he started waking up at 2:30 a.m., 3:30 a.m., and 4:50 a.m., like he did last night.

We took Milo to Science World and played in the Kids area -- it was his third time there and my first. I really need to get my name put on Mom's membership. The rain is coming soon (although it's a sunny day in Vancouver right now!) and I need rainy day options.

This weekend, we stayed closer to home and checked out the KinderGym at the Britannia Community Centre.

Wow, what a great idea. They haul out a roomful of toys and turn an unused gym into a huge playland. Another great rainy day option. I'm taking notes. The best part was how many kids Milo's age were there. Even though he mostly just played with the cars.

And how does he kick back and relax when he gets home? He learned from the best. That's the dog, not his Daddy.

Milo is bigger and cuter

Enjoy this playhouse while you can, Milo, because Ray's taking it apart in a couple of weeks. (Aaaawwww...)

Don't worry, fella, he's disassembling it so he can pack it up on the roof of his van and take it up to the cottage. Yes, the next time you see it, it will be up in a tree. I'm not going to tell you that part, I'll just let it be a surprise.

Wow, I took this photo in September and now this hoodie is already too small. Honestly, I don't know what we'd do for clothing without all the people we know who have boys slightly older than Milo.

As of today, fully half of Milo's clothes have someone else's name written on the tags.

Now we just need to find a baby a little smaller than Milo and thus complete the circle of second-handing down. Our garage is getting crowded.

I have seen the fnords

23.

I know the story has been BoingBoinged, but I just have to blog it too.

Robert Anton Wilson, author of The Illuminatus! Trilogy among dozens of other works, is dying in poverty. While this may be a good time to discuss the apalling state of health care in the U.S.A., that won't help him.

BoingBoing stories are here and here.

From Common Ground magazine, July 1999

Question: What is your most serious concern about the planet?

Robert Anton Wilson: The Stupidity Problem. As J.R. "Bob" Dobbs has said, "You know how dumb the average guy is, right? Well, mathematically, by definition, half of them are even dumber than that."

My favorite philosopher, George Carlin, points out that if you doubt that, take along a pad every time you go out and make a note whenever you see or hear something incredibly stupid. At the end of an average day, you'll have at least 40 notes. And that's even if you don't go into a church or political meeting.

UPDATE -- Monday, October 9, 2006

Wow, thanks to generous blog readers all over the world, Mr. Wilson can stay at his home. Read the complete update at BoingBoing, including a note from RAW himself. It made me cry.

Milo at the zoo

Okay, summer is over. Here in Vancouver, it's gone out with a bang for decades: the Pacific National Exhibition, or PNE. It's a staple here in the city and has run for 96 years in the same place.

Highlights, depending on who you ask are the petting zoo, the nightly fireworks, great musical shows, Playland being open late, and mini donuts.

So we were faced with the prospect of bringing Milo, who's barely one.

When it all came down to it, the cost, effort, crowds, and the boy's short attention span made us hold off for another year. And since we decided that the thing he'd enjoy the most would be the petting zoo, we took off toward Maplewood Farms. It's like the PNE except that it's missing everything but the petting zoo part.

Okay, these horses were huge. Clydesdales of a different colour. Milo wasn't sure what to make of them and he just stared and stared. Until the thing whinnied -- Milo cracked up and it was all good after that.

The chickens were more Milo's size. And, as it turns out, speed. I would have chased them too but there were people watching, so I had to live vicariously through Milo.
